Who can serve documents in Yukon
Requirements depend on the court and document
Yukon’s Supreme Court Rule 11 specifies who receives personal service and how, but the current rule reviewed here does not establish a general qualification for who may personally serve an adult individual. Do not assume a particular server qualification without checking the proceeding-specific rule. Yukon Rules of Court, Rule 11.
Accepted methods of service
Methods depend on the court, document and any order
An originating process must be served unless the defendant or respondent enters an appearance. Rule 11 sets out personal-service methods for individuals, corporations, associations, First Nations, tribunals, children and people under legal disability. Yukon Rules of Court, rules 11(1)–(2).
Later documents go to an address for delivery and may be delivered, mailed, faxed or emailed where Rule 11 permits. If service under Rule 11 is impractical, substituted service requires a court order under current Rule 12. Yukon Rules of Court, rules 11(5)–(8) and 12(1)–(3).
Time limits and rules for serving
For the Supreme Court, an appearance is generally due within seven days after service; a longer period applies when service is outside Yukon. Yukon Rules of Court, rules 13(6) and 14(2).
An original statement of claim is not in force for more than one year unless served; renewal may be ordered. Yukon Rules of Court, rule 9(1).
Restrictions on serving
Court- and document-specific limits
Special service rules apply to children and people under legal disability, including service on a litigation guardian or another specified person and the Public Guardian and Trustee. Yukon Rules of Court, rule 11(2)(f)–(g).
Older versions of Rule 12 include mail/drop-and-mail alternatives that have since been repealed; current substituted service under Rule 12 requires a court order. Family and Small Claims matters have separate rules, so do not assume the Supreme Court summary applies to them. Yukon Rules of Court, rules 12 and 63 · 2026 Annotated Rules update.
Proof of service and affidavit requirements
Yukon Supreme Court Rule 11 provides for an Affidavit of Service (Form 7) or Affidavit of Delivery (Form 8). It must identify who was served, the document, when, where, how and by whom, and attach the front page of each document as a separate exhibit. A lawyer’s written acknowledgment removes the need for affidavit verification. Yukon Rules of Court, rule 11(10)–(11). This is general information, not legal advice; confirm the current form and filing requirements.
